QUOTES

Since 2010 is the 30th anniversary of the death of pianist Bill Evans, it’s been difficult to escape the multitude of tributes both in concert and on disc to the influential pianist. One that many may have missed is Italian bassist Roberto Mattei’s tribute A Time Remembered. Rather than just a piano trio (Evans’ preferred format) or a standard Jazz quartet/quintet, Mattei has assembled an octet: a string sextet (including guitar) plus piano and drums. Mattei wrote arrangements for six of Evans’ tunes and Burt Bacharach’s “Alfie,” a song with which Evans had a special communion. Additionally Mattei wrote a piece called “Evan’s (sic) Tune.” It’s clear Mattei studied this music intensively and the arrangements aren’t quite what one would expect. The strings couch Evans’ melodies in complementary but unusual harmonies. They’re integral parts of the songs, not mere add-ons. All in all a tribute that is free from cliché and one that imbues the music with its own character rather than aping the honoree. Evans fans are well-served by Mattei with this disc. – Extract from the prestigious American magazine “Cadence Magazine” (Apr-Maj-Jun 2010).
