RESUME’

Born in 1971, I began my musical studies in 1982 by attending clarinet courses. Thereafter, I devoted time to studying the electric bass, and also taking up harmony, ensemble music and jazz improvisation courses in 1993 held by R. CIAMMARUGHI. In 1998, I began studying the double bass with P. DALLA PORTA, and continued from 2000 with Maestro S. DALL’ORA at the G. Verdi Conservatory of Music in Como until the Diploma. I then continued my studies in jazz, obtaining the level II diploma with a mark of 110 cum laude at Milan’s G. Verdi Conservatory of Music, both classical, initially with Maestro A. SERRA and then under the guidance of Maestro G. ETTORRE at Scuola Musicale di Milano, in addition to Maestro A. BOCINI at Scuola di Musica di Fiesole (Florence). Successively I attended an arrangement and orchestration course under Maestro D. MINOTTI.
As a double bass player, I had the possibility of accompanying, both in jazz and classical, important soloists of the Italian and international music scene, including Dave Liebman, Greg Osby, Ralph Alessi, Rudy Royston, Larry Schneider, Tosca, Antonella Ruggiero, José Carreras, Giuseppe Ettorre, Milan Rericha, among others. I taught at the Filarmonica School of Villadossola (VB), the Associazione Confetture Musicali of Domodossola (VB) for whom I also acted as educational coordinator in the year 2014/15, in addition to the following middle schools: Liceo Musicale di Monza, the Accademia Sant ‘Agostino di Biandronno (Varese), “Innocenzo IX” of Baceno (VB), “F.lli Casetti” of Crevoladossola (VB), “FM Beltrami “of Omegna (VB) and “M.O. Attilio Bagnolini” of Villadossola (VB). I presently teaches double bass, electric bass and jazz music. From 2014 to 2016, I directed the WEDNESDAY MODERN ORCHESTRA for which I also worked on the composition of the arrangements. In the 2009-2013 period, I participated in the educational projects pertaining to the VERBANO CUSIO OSSOLA province, namely: “CHIT – L’universo della musica senza confini” and “Percorsi Sonori” taking on the role of both teacher and arranger.

QUOTES

Since 2010 is the 30th anniversary of the death of pianist Bill Evans, it’s been difficult to escape the multitude of tributes both in concert and on disc to the influential pianist. One that many may have missed is Italian bassist Roberto Mattei’s tribute A Time Remembered. Rather than just a piano trio (Evans’ preferred format) or a standard Jazz quartet/quintet, Mattei has assembled an octet: a string sextet (including guitar) plus piano and drums. Mattei wrote arrangements for six of Evans’ tunes and Burt Bacharach’s “Alfie,” a song with which Evans had a special communion. Additionally Mattei wrote a piece called “Evan’s (sic) Tune.” It’s clear Mattei studied this music intensively and the arrangements aren’t quite what one would expect. The strings couch Evans’ melodies in complementary but unusual harmonies. They’re integral parts of the songs, not mere add-ons. All in all a tribute that is free from cliché and one that imbues the music with its own character rather than aping the honoree. Evans fans are well-served by Mattei with this disc. – Extract from the prestigious American magazine “Cadence Magazine” (Apr-Maj-Jun 2010).
